How to treat rickets?

The treatment of osteomalacia requires targeted measures based on the cause. The osteomalacia caused by rickets is mainly related to vitamin D deficiency. Treatments include vitamin D supplementation, dietary adjustment, increased sunlight exposure, and drug therapy.

1. Vitamin D supplement

Vitamin D deficiency is the main cause of rickets, and direct vitamin D supplementation is the key. Vitamin D drops or capsules can be taken orally, and the dosage needs to be adjusted according to the doctor's advice. For those with severe deficiency, short-term high-dose supplementation may be required, followed by a maintenance dose.

2. Adjust your diet

Increasing foods rich in vitamin D and calcium in the diet can help improve rickets. Fish such as salmon and sardines, egg yolks, dairy products and fortified cereals are all good sources. At the same time, moderate intake of calcium-rich foods such as milk, soy products and green leafy vegetables can promote bone health.

3. Increase sunlight exposure

The ultraviolet rays in the sun can promote the synthesis of vitamin D in the skin. Spending 15-30 minutes outdoors every day, especially between 10 am and 3 pm, can help increase the level of vitamin D in the body. Be careful to avoid overexposure to the sun to avoid skin damage.

4. Drug treatment

For patients with more severe symptoms, doctors may prescribe phosphate preparations or calcium supplements to help improve bone mineralization. In some cases, active vitamin D analogs, such as calcitriol, may be needed to promote calcium absorption and utilization.

5. Regular monitoring and follow-up

During treatment, it is necessary to regularly monitor blood levels of vitamin D and calcium, as well as bone recovery. The treatment plan will be adjusted based on the test results to ensure efficacy and prevent complications.

The treatment of osteomalacia requires a combination of multiple methods, from vitamin D supplementation to lifestyle adjustments, all of which require long-term persistence. Through timely intervention and scientific treatment, osteomalacia caused by rickets can effectively improve symptoms and promote bone health. Regular medical treatment and compliance are the key to ensuring treatment effectiveness.
