Leaking stool after surgery for perianal abscess

Leaking stool after surgery for perianal abscess

Postoperative stool leakage after perianal abscess surgery may be related to surgical trauma, infection, or impaired anal sphincter function, and prompt medical evaluation and targeted treatment are required. Treatments include medication, anal function training, and secondary surgical repair when necessary.

1. Surgical trauma: Perianal abscess surgery may cause some damage to the tissues around the anus, resulting in a temporary decrease in anal control function. After surgery, the wound needs to be kept clean to avoid infection. At the same time, antibiotics and analgesics, such as cephalosporin antibiotics and ibuprofen, should be used as prescribed by the doctor to promote wound healing.

2. Infection: Postoperative infection may cause local tissue inflammation and affect the function of the anal sphincter. If fever, local swelling or increased pain occurs, seek medical attention immediately. The doctor may adjust the type or dose of antibiotics according to the situation, such as using amoxicillin clavulanate potassium or metronidazole, and perform wound debridement if necessary.

3. Impaired anal sphincter function: Surgery may directly or indirectly damage the anal sphincter, resulting in decreased control of bowel movements. This can be improved through anal function training, such as Kegel exercises, practiced 3-4 times a day, 10-15 minutes each time, to strengthen the sphincter. In severe cases, secondary surgery is required to repair the sphincter, such as sphincteroplasty or artificial sphincter implantation.

4. Diet adjustment: Postoperative diet should be high in fiber and easy to digest, such as oats, sweet potatoes, spinach, etc. Avoid spicy and irritating foods to reduce the irritation of the wound by defecation. At the same time, maintain adequate water intake, drink 1500-2000 ml of water every day to prevent constipation.

5. Adjust your lifestyle: Avoid sitting or standing for long periods of time after surgery. Do some light activities, such as walking or yoga, to promote blood circulation and speed up recovery. Avoid excessive force during bowel movements. Take a warm water bath for 10-15 minutes each time to relieve local discomfort.

Postoperative stool leakage after perianal abscess surgery requires targeted treatment based on the specific cause, including medication, training, and surgical repair, combined with adjustments in diet and lifestyle habits to promote recovery and restore anal function. If symptoms persist or worsen, seek medical attention in a timely manner to avoid delaying treatment.
