Symptoms of nasopharyngeal angiofibroma

Symptoms of nasopharyngeal angiofibroma

The main symptoms of nasopharyngeal angiofibroma include repeated nosebleeds, unilateral nasal congestion, hearing loss, etc. Early detection and timely medical treatment are crucial, especially when there are repeated and massive nosebleeds, you must be vigilant and go to the otolaryngology department for examination and diagnosis as soon as possible.

1. Nosebleed: A common early manifestation of nasopharyngeal angiofibroma is recurrent nosebleed without cause. This type of bleeding is characterized by unilateral, large amount, and difficult to stop on its own. Because the tumor has a rich blood supply, the bleeding may appear bright red or heavy. If the bleeding is frequent or the amount increases, you need to see a doctor immediately. Based on the medical history and examination results, the doctor will use endoscopy or nasopharyngeal endoscopy to evaluate the injury point, and may perform a CT scan to understand the specific location and size of the tumor.

2. Nasal congestion: Because this tumor grows in the nasopharynx, it will compress the surrounding tissues and easily cause unilateral nasal congestion, which may gradually worsen. As the tumor grows, it may completely block the nasal cavity and affect normal breathing. Make sure to keep the nasal cavity clean to avoid aggravating mucosal damage due to manual nasal digging. If obvious nasal congestion symptoms occur, early screening should be carried out. For smaller lesions, laser resection or low-temperature plasma technology may be used to treat them.

3 Hearing loss: As the tumor grows, it may compress the Eustachian tube, leading to secretory otitis media or hearing loss, which is often manifested as a stuffy feeling in the ear or a gradual decrease in hearing. This symptom usually occurs at the same time as nasal congestion. If this happens, you should seek medical attention as soon as possible, especially in adolescent males. Treatment usually involves surgical removal of the tumor to improve these hearing-related problems.

Since nasopharyngeal angiofibroma is a benign tumor, it is located in a special location and grows rapidly, so it is easy to be ignored when the symptoms are mild. Once the above situation occurs, especially repeated bleeding, medical consultation and relevant examinations should be sought as soon as possible. Through early detection and timely treatment, nasopharyngeal angiofibroma can be effectively controlled to avoid more serious health effects.
