How to treat puerperal mastitis

Postpartum mastitis needs to be treated with appropriate methods based on the severity of the disease, and serious cases require timely medical treatment.

Mastitis is a common problem during lactation, mainly caused by milk stasis due to blocked mammary ducts or inflammation of breast tissue due to bacterial infection. Postpartum women have not yet fully recovered and have low immunity, so they are prone to aggravating the condition by ignoring symptoms in the early stages of mastitis.

In mild cases, it can be relieved through proper breastfeeding and care. Ensuring that the breasts are completely empty is the key. You can try frequent breastfeeding or using a breast pump to drain excess milk. At the same time, use a warm towel to promote breast patency. If necessary, gently massage the breast lump area. If the local skin is obviously red, swollen, hot and painful, or systemic symptoms such as fever occur, it is recommended to see a doctor to prevent the spread of infection.

To prevent mastitis from recurring, pay attention to the correct posture when feeding. Let the baby empty one breast before switching to the other. Avoid long-term milk accumulation. If there is too much milk, pump out the appropriate amount. Keep the nipple skin clean and dry to avoid laceration and infection. If symptoms recur, go to the hospital in time for a comprehensive examination and treatment according to the doctor's advice.
