What are the consequences of a serious perianal abscess?

If perianal abscess is not treated promptly, it may lead to more serious complications, such as anal fistula, which greatly complicates treatment. Perianal abscess refers to an infected abscess that forms in the area around the anus. When pus accumulates between tissues, it can cause symptoms such as pain, redness, swelling, and fever.

The formation of perianal abscesses is often related to bacterial infection. Common causes include anal gland infection, anal trauma, or complications of chronic diseases such as Crohn's disease. Since the anal area is home to many bacteria and the skin is thin, the infection can spread easily. Diabetic patients or people with weakened immune systems are more susceptible to this type of infection. The symptoms include swelling and severe pain around the anus, restlessness, and in severe cases, systemic symptoms such as fever and chills.

If perianal abscesses are not treated effectively, pus may penetrate the nearby tissue gaps and form chronic, non-healing anal fistulas. Anal fistulas are a relatively complex condition that refers to abnormal channels formed after abscesses rupture, and their treatment often requires surgical intervention. Repeated infection and rupture can lead to extensive destruction of local tissues, affect anal function, and may even cause more serious infectious diseases.

It is recommended that people who suspect they have perianal abscesses should see a doctor as soon as possible so that the doctor can make an accurate diagnosis and necessary drainage treatment. In daily life, it is particularly important to keep the area clean. Good hygiene habits in the anal area can reduce the risk of infection. The diet should be high in fiber, maintain smooth bowel movements, and avoid anal injuries caused by constipation. If there is persistent discomfort or worsening pain, seek medical help immediately to prevent the condition from developing to the point where it is difficult to control.
