X-ray examination of kidney and ureteral stones

X-ray examination of kidney and ureteral stones is one of the commonly used methods for diagnosing stone disease, which can effectively determine the location, size and number of stones.

Stones are hard masses formed by excessive deposition of minerals and other substances in urine. Kidney stones and ureteral stones can block urine excretion and may cause symptoms such as pain, hematuria, and infection. X-ray examination is a diagnostic method that uses radiation imaging to identify the shape and characteristics of stones.

Common X-ray examination methods include plain film (KUB) and intravenous urography (IVU). KUB does not require the injection of contrast agent and is suitable for observing most calcium-containing stones, but has low sensitivity to smaller or non-calcium stones. IVU requires the injection of iodine-containing contrast agent, which can clearly show the urinary tract structure and stone location. It is more suitable for the examination of complex or irregular stones, but is not suitable for patients who are allergic to contrast agents or have abnormal renal function.

Fasting is usually recommended before the examination, and the urinary system is evaluated.
