Acute suppurative osteoarthritis

Acute suppurative osteoarthritis

The treatment of acute suppurative osteoarthritis is mainly antibiotics, and surgical drainage is required when necessary. The cause is mostly bacterial infection. Acute suppurative osteoarthritis is a suppurative inflammation in the joint caused by bacterial infection. Common pathogens are Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus. The infection route includes hematogenous spread, spread of infection in adjacent tissues, or direct traumatic infection. Patients often show symptoms of redness, swelling, heat, pain, and limited movement of the joints. In severe cases, they may be accompanied by systemic symptoms such as fever and chills.

1. Antibiotic treatment is the first choice for acute suppurative osteoarthritis. Use broad-spectrum antibiotics such as ceftriaxone, vancomycin or clindamycin in the early stage, and adjust the medication according to the results of bacterial culture and drug sensitivity test. The course of antibiotic treatment is usually 4-6 weeks, and it needs to be given intravenously for at least 2 weeks before being changed to oral administration.

2. Surgical treatment is suitable for cases where antibiotic treatment is ineffective or pus accumulates in the joint. Common surgical methods include joint puncture and drainage, arthroscopic irrigation and drainage, and open surgical debridement. Surgery can effectively remove the infection focus, reduce joint pressure, and promote recovery.

3. Joint immobilization and functional exercise are important auxiliary treatment measures. In the acute stage, plaster or brace should be used to fix the affected limb to relieve pain and prevent deformity. After the infection is controlled, passive and active joint movements are gradually performed to prevent joint stiffness and muscle atrophy.

4. Nutritional support helps improve the body's resistance. It is recommended to increase protein intake, such as eggs, fish and soy products, supplement vitamin C and zinc, and promote tissue repair. Drink plenty of water, get enough sleep, and avoid overwork.

5. Preventing recurrence and complications is the key. During treatment, blood routine, C-reactive protein and joint imaging examinations should be regularly reviewed to monitor changes in the condition. Pay attention to personal hygiene, avoid trauma and infection, and promptly treat infection foci in other parts of the body.

The prognosis of acute suppurative osteoarthritis is closely related to early diagnosis and timely treatment. Standardized use of antibiotics, surgical intervention when necessary, combined with rehabilitation exercises and nutritional support can effectively control infection, restore joint function, and prevent complications. Patients should follow the doctor's instructions to complete the entire course of treatment, follow up regularly, and pay attention to lifestyle adjustments to reduce the risk of recurrence.
