Is congenital hydrocephalus hereditary?

Congenital hydrocephalus may be related to genetic factors, but not all cases are caused by genetics. 1) Genetic factors

2) Environmental factors

For example, maternal infection with toxoplasmosis, rubella or cytomegalovirus, malnutrition during pregnancy, exposure to harmful chemicals or drugs, etc., may lead to abnormalities in the fetal central nervous system, thus causing hydrocephalus. To minimize these risks, pregnant women should supplement folic acid as recommended by their doctors, avoid contact with harmful substances, and do prenatal checkups to detect fetal health abnormalities in a timely manner.

3) Abnormal fetal development

Congenital hydrocephalus may also be caused by physiological structural problems that occur during fetal development. For example, narrowing or occlusion of the pathways in the central nervous system leads to obstruction of cerebrospinal fluid circulation, resulting in hydrocephalus. Lymphangioma, hemorrhage, infection, etc. in the fetal ventricles can also cause hydrocephalus. If the fetus is suspected of having abnormal brain development, doctors usually recommend further testing through B-ultrasound, MRI, etc. to determine the specific cause and possible intervention measures.

4) Pregnancy trauma or complications

External injuries or complications during pregnancy (such as gestational diabetes and hypertension) may also increase the risk of congenital hydrocephalus in the fetus. If the pregnant woman falls accidentally or the fetus is traumatized during delivery, such as intracranial hemorrhage, cerebrospinal fluid circulation may be blocked, leading to hydrocephalus.
