Do breast cysts require surgery?

Whether a breast cyst requires surgery depends on the specific type, size, severity of symptoms, and impact on life. Not all breast cysts require surgery. Most cysts are benign and usually do not require special intervention when there are no obvious symptoms.

Breast cysts are a common breast problem that manifests as small fluid-filled sacs that form in the breast glands. They are often associated with fluctuations in hormone levels, such as during the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, or menopause. Breast cysts may appear singly or in clusters, ranging in diameter from the size of a mung bean to the size of a ping-pong ball. The vast majority of cysts are benign and pose no threat to health, but some cysts require further evaluation if they are accompanied by pain, breast fullness, or an abnormal texture when palpated.

Breast cysts are managed differently depending on their nature and presentation. Small, asymptomatic cysts generally require only regular follow-up observation, with ultrasound monitoring every 6-12 months to check for changes. If the cyst is large and causes significant discomfort, your doctor may perform a fine needle aspiration to remove fluid from the cyst, relieving pressure and pain. Some more complex cysts or those with a malignant tendency (e.g., cysts that feel hard and irregular to palpation, or have spontaneous nipple discharge) require a biopsy or surgical removal to identify potential problems.

In order to avoid discomfort or recurrence caused by breast cysts, you should pay attention to breast health management in your daily life. In terms of diet, it is recommended to reduce the intake of high-fat and high-sugar foods, and appropriately supplement foods rich in vitamin E and unsaturated fatty acids. Avoid wearing tight underwear for a long time to reduce breast pressure. Maintaining a regular schedule and moderate exercise can help regulate hormone levels in the body. If you find a lump or other abnormal changes in your breast, you should consult a doctor in time to ensure your health.
