Can I drink less alcohol if I have gallstones?

Can I drink less alcohol if I have gallstones?

Patients with gallstones should reduce or avoid drinking alcohol, as alcohol can stimulate gallbladder contraction and may cause biliary colic or worsen symptoms. Treatments for gallstones include medication, dietary adjustments, and surgical intervention when necessary.

1. Drug treatment

The drug treatment of gallstones is mainly aimed at relieving symptoms and preventing complications. Commonly used drugs include ursodeoxycholic acid, which is used to dissolve cholesterol stones; anti-inflammatory and choleretic tablets, which help relieve gallbladder inflammation; and antispasmodics such as atropine, which are used to relieve biliary colic. These drugs should be used under the guidance of a doctor and should not be used on your own.

2. Diet adjustment

Diet management is an important measure to control gallstones. Reduce the intake of high-fat, high-cholesterol foods, such as fried foods, fatty meats, and animal offal, to avoid stimulating gallbladder contraction. Increase fiber-rich foods, such as whole grains, vegetables, and fruits, to help promote bile excretion. Eating small, frequent meals can also reduce the burden on the gallbladder.

3. Surgical treatment

Surgery is an effective treatment for gallstones with severe symptoms or recurring symptoms. Common surgical methods include laparoscopic cholecystectomy, which is less invasive and has a quick recovery; open cholecystectomy, which is suitable for complex cases; and endoscopic retrograde pancreaticocholangiopancreatography, which is used to remove bile duct stones. The choice of surgery should be determined by the doctor based on the patient's specific situation.

Patients with gallstones should avoid drinking alcohol, as alcohol can stimulate gallbladder contraction and may cause biliary colic or worsen symptoms. Through medication, dietary adjustments, and surgical intervention when necessary, the disease can be effectively controlled and the quality of life improved.
