What should I check for gallstones?

Gallstones are a common digestive system disease that usually requires imaging examinations to confirm the diagnosis. Timely detection and correct examination can effectively help patients alleviate symptoms and improve their quality of life.

Gallstones are hard masses formed in the gallbladder, composed of cholesterol, bile salts and other waste products. Diet and lifestyle are two important factors to understand their causes. If you consume high-fat, high-cholesterol foods for a long time, the cholesterol content is likely to be too high, which will increase the concentration of cholesterol in bile and promote the formation of gallstones. Being overweight, lack of exercise, pregnancy and certain medications may also promote the formation of stones.

Common methods for detecting gallstones include ultrasound, CT scans, and MRCP (magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography). Ultrasound is the first choice for most patients because it is noninvasive, painless, and can accurately locate stones. CT scans are excellent in providing accurate images of the gallbladder and stones, although there is a small risk of radiation. MRCP is ideal for detecting bile duct stones, especially for patients who need a detailed view of the bile duct. The choice of which examination technique to choose is usually determined by the doctor based on the patient's specific situation.

If you suspect you have gallstones, it is recommended to maintain a light diet, control cholesterol intake and increase fiber intake. You can eat more low-fat foods and fresh fruits and vegetables to help digestion, but you still need to seek medical attention in time if the symptoms are severe. Maintaining good living habits, such as regular exercise and maintaining a normal weight, can also reduce the risk of stone formation. If you encounter severe pain or fever, it is best to seek professional medical help immediately to avoid delaying the condition.
