Consequences of untreated gallstones

If gallstones are not treated for a long time, they may cause serious health problems such as cholecystitis, cholangitis and even pancreatitis, which can be life-threatening and must be taken seriously.

Gallstones are crystals formed in the gallbladder from cholesterol, bilirubin or calcium salts in bile. They may vary in size and number. Most gallstones have no obvious symptoms in the early stages, but when the stones block the bile duct or cause inflammation, severe right upper abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and even fever often occur. Some asymptomatic gallstones may not be discovered for a long time, but this does not mean there is no risk.

Untreated gallstones may lead to a range of complications. The most common is acute cholecystitis, which is characterized by persistent abdominal pain and fever. In severe cases, surgery may be required to remove the gallbladder. If the stones fall into the common bile duct, they may also cause cholangitis, leading to severe infection symptoms such as jaundice, chills and high fever. Gallstones may also induce pancreatitis because the stones block the common opening of the pancreas and bile duct, preventing pancreatic juice from being discharged, causing the pancreas to digest itself. Symptoms include severe abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, and may even be life-threatening.

To reduce these risks, it is recommended to eat a balanced diet, avoid high-fat, high-cholesterol diets, and eat more fiber-rich vegetables and fruits. If you have been diagnosed with gallstones and have symptoms, you should see a doctor as soon as possible to assess whether surgery is needed; even if you have no symptoms, you need to have regular checkups and pay close attention to changes in your condition. If you suddenly experience severe abdominal pain or jaundice, you should seek professional help immediately.
