Gallstones symptoms and treatment

Gallstones symptoms and treatment

Gallstones are a common digestive disease that presents with severe pain in the right upper abdomen, sometimes accompanied by pain in the back and right shoulder, and possible nausea and vomiting. In order to avoid further complications, prompt medical attention is key. The diagnosis can usually be confirmed during an ultrasound examination.

The symptoms of gallstones vary from person to person. Some patients may be asymptomatic, while a certain percentage of patients may have acute cholecystitis due to stones blocking the bile duct. Typical symptoms include fever, jaundice, indigestion and loss of appetite. Patients with severe symptoms or those who remain asymptomatic for a long time are more likely to face the risk of gallbladder infection and cholangitis and should undergo medical examination as soon as possible.

In terms of treatment, there are several common options. Medical lithotripsy is mainly suitable for cholesterol stones. This treatment is slow and may take months or even years. Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy is a non-invasive treatment method suitable for patients who do not want to undergo surgery, but may have recurrent stones. The most effective treatment is laparoscopic cholecystectomy, which is less invasive and has a quick recovery. It is suitable for patients with recurrent gallstones or complications. In daily life, controlling diet and exercising regularly can help manage and prevent gallstones. Eating more high-fiber foods such as fruits and whole grains, eating less high-cholesterol and high-fat foods, and avoiding rapid weight loss can also reduce the risk of gallstones.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, eating a balanced diet, and having regular physical examinations can effectively reduce the frequency of gallstone attacks and improve the prognosis of the disease. If you feel unwell in your daily life, be sure to consult a medical professional for medical help in a timely manner. Through a reasonable diet and lifestyle adjustments, most people can effectively prevent and control gallstones and improve their quality of life.
