What causes breast cysts?

Breast cysts may be caused by a variety of reasons, mainly closely related to fluctuations in hormone levels, genetics, lifestyle, and the physiological aging process. To address these reasons, it is necessary to improve lifestyle habits, regularly monitor breast health, and seek medical attention when necessary.

1) Fluctuating hormone levels

The occurrence of breast cysts is closely related to the fluctuation of hormone levels in the body, especially estrogen. Excessive stimulation of estrogen may cause breast gland hyperplasia and duct blockage, eventually forming cysts. This situation is particularly common during the menstrual cycle, pregnancy or menopause. It is recommended to maintain a regular lifestyle and avoid long-term use of estrogen-containing drugs. If there is no special need, it is not advisable to abuse contraceptives; if you are in the menopausal stage, you can consult a doctor whether you need hormone replacement therapy.

2) Genetic factors

If there are female family members with breast cysts, breast hyperplasia or breast cancer, the individual's risk of developing breast cysts may increase. This shows that breast health is greatly affected by genes. It is recommended that women with a family history of breast disease undergo breast ultrasound examinations every year after the age of 30, and can choose breast mammography after the age of 40 for early screening and early detection.

3) Lifestyle and eating habits

High-fat diet, long-term mental stress, and lack of sleep are important external factors that cause breast cysts. An unhealthy diet can affect the metabolism of hormones in the body, while stress and staying up late can lead to endocrine disorders. It is recommended to reduce the intake of high-fat and high-sugar foods, and eat more beans, cruciferous vegetables (such as broccoli, cabbage), and foods rich in Omega-3 (such as salmon, flax seeds). When you are under great stress, you can practice yoga, meditation, or regularly perform low- to medium-intensity exercise, 3 to 5 times a week, 30 minutes each time.

4) Physiological aging or breast hyperplasia

As women age, breast tissue will gradually undergo physiological proliferation or degeneration. This is part of the natural aging process, but it is also the stage when breast cysts are more common. Women aged 40 to 50 are more likely to develop cystic lesions. You should perform a proper breast self-examination to observe whether there are lumps or changes in pain in the breast area; if you find any abnormalities, you should seek medical attention immediately.

5) Pathological causes such as trauma or infection

When breast tissue is squeezed or collided by external forces, it may cause local congestion and accumulation of tissue fluid, which may form cysts over time. Breast infection may also cause similar lesions, but it is usually accompanied by symptoms such as redness, swelling, heat and pain, which require anti-infection treatment. Those who experience acute pain should seek medical attention immediately and use antibiotics as prescribed by the doctor if necessary.

Breast cysts are related to a variety of factors, but most breast cysts are benign. Do a good job of daily health management and regular physical examinations every year, especially breast health examinations, can reduce the risk of breast cysts worsening and missed diagnosis. If you find abnormal symptoms, such as persistent breast pain or liquid discharge, you should seek medical help as soon as possible.
