What does a breast cyst eventually develop into?

Breast cysts generally do not become malignant, but if not treated or monitored promptly, they may cause infection, increase in size and compress surrounding tissues, or even mask underlying malignancies.

Breast cysts are a type of cystic lesion formed by the accumulation of fluid in the mammary ducts. They are benign lesions and are common in women of childbearing age. The main causes include hormone level fluctuations, fibrocystic hyperplasia of the breast, and stimulation from external factors such as diet and emotions. Untreated cysts may cause local discomfort, manifested as breast swelling, tenderness, and even inflammation and infection at the cyst site. Some cysts may compress breast tissue as they grow larger. Although simple breast cysts generally do not turn into breast cancer, cysts may mask the early symptoms of breast cancer, especially for those with a family history of breast cancer.

Daily adjustments to lifestyle habits can help relieve symptoms, such as reducing caffeine and high-fat diet intake, maintaining a regular work and rest schedule, and regularly monitoring lesions through breast B-ultrasound. If the cyst is infected, it can be treated with anti-inflammatory drugs such as cephalosporin antibiotics; if the cyst is too large or accompanied by persistent pain, puncture drainage can be considered; for complex lesions suspected of cancer, surgical resection and pathological biopsy are required. It is recommended that women seek medical attention as soon as they find breast cysts, and receive personalized treatment and long-term follow-up according to the doctor's advice.
