Treatment principles for suppurative arthritis in children

Treatment principles for suppurative arthritis in children

Pediatric septic arthritis is a type of joint inflammation caused by bacterial infection. It is common in children and requires prompt treatment to prevent joint damage. Treatment principles include antibiotic treatment, joint drainage, and rehabilitation care.

1. Antibiotic treatment

Antibiotics are the key to treating pediatric suppurative arthritis. Doctors will select appropriate antibiotics based on the results of bacterial culture and drug sensitivity tests. Commonly used antibiotics include cephalosporins such as ceftriaxone, penicillins such as amoxicillin and vancomycin. Intravenous injection is usually used in the initial stage of treatment, and oral administration can be used after the condition stabilizes. The course of treatment is generally 2-4 weeks.

2. Joint drainage

Joint drainage is an important measure to remove pus and relieve pressure in joints. Common drainage methods include joint puncture and surgical drainage. Joint puncture is suitable for early cases, where pus is extracted through a puncture needle and antibiotics are injected. For severe cases or those who are ineffective with puncture, surgical drainage is required to completely remove the infected tissue.

3. Rehabilitation care

Rehabilitation care helps restore joint function. In the acute phase, joints need to be immobilized to avoid further damage. After inflammation is controlled, physical therapy such as hot compresses, massage, and joint activity training can be performed to gradually restore joint mobility. Parents need to pay attention to the nutritional intake of their children and supplement them with foods rich in protein and vitamins, such as eggs, milk, and fresh fruits and vegetables.

The treatment of pediatric suppurative arthritis requires a combination of antibiotics, drainage, and rehabilitation care. Early intervention can effectively avoid complications. Parents should pay close attention to the symptoms of their children, seek medical treatment in a timely manner, and follow the doctor's instructions for treatment and care to ensure that their children recover as soon as possible.
