How to Drain Perianal Abscess

Perianal abscess drainage is a surgical procedure to open the abscess and drain the pus to relieve infection and avoid more serious complications. If you experience local swelling and severe pain around the anus, with or without fever, you should seek medical attention as soon as possible.

Perianal abscess is a suppurative lesion caused by anal gland infection, which often manifests as local redness, swelling and pain. If not treated in time, it may develop into anal fistula. Drainage is currently the most common method for treating perianal abscess, and it is also a more effective way. Surgery to remove inflammation can effectively relieve pain and promote healing.

The surgery is usually performed under local or general anesthesia. The abscess is cut open to drain the pus. The doctor will try to make an incision in a non-weight-bearing area that is easy to heal, and may insert a drainage tube after the drainage is completed to ensure that the pus is emptied. Postoperative wounds generally use open drainage, and the doctor or the patient needs to change the dressing every day, keep it clean and dry to promote recovery and prevent secondary infection.

Postoperative care is very important. Eat a light diet and eat more foods rich in dietary fiber, such as vegetables and fruits, to help prevent constipation. Maintain anal hygiene and use warm water to clean after each bowel movement. If the wound is not healed well or there is persistent infection, follow-up visits are required to adjust the treatment plan.
