What causes congenital spinal deformity?

Congenital spinal deformity is mainly caused by abnormal formation of the spine during embryonic development, which may be related to genetic factors, environmental influences, and physiological abnormalities during embryonic development. During embryonic development, segmentation or formation disorders of the vertebrae can lead to spinal deformity, and certain external factors such as exposure to toxins in the environment during pregnancy may also increase the risk of disease.

In terms of genetic factors, certain gene mutations or familial genetic diseases may lead to congenital spinal deformities, especially when there are repeated cases of the disease in the family, the genetic risk will be higher. Environmental factors also play an important role. For example, the mother's exposure to radiation, toxic chemicals, or taking drugs that cause abnormal fetal development during pregnancy may increase the probability of the fetus becoming ill. Among physiological factors, abnormal embryonic vertebral formation is the core cause, mainly including vertebral absence, incomplete segmentation, or interrupted formation. Certain diseases during pregnancy, such as maternal diabetes or infectious diseases, may also interfere with the normal development of the fetal spine.

Prevention of congenital spinal deformities requires health management before and during pregnancy. Maintaining a reasonable diet during pregnancy, such as increasing the intake of foods rich in folic acid such as spinach, beans or fish, can help reduce the risk of fetal neural tube and skeletal abnormalities. Avoid contact with harmful substances, reduce exposure to radiation and chemicals, and seek medical attention as soon as possible if any premonitory health problems occur. For those with a family history of genetic diseases, it is recommended to receive genetic counseling before pregnancy and undergo regular ultrasound examinations during pregnancy to detect possible developmental problems in the fetus at an early stage.
