What is the difference between a breast tumor and a cyst?

The biggest difference between breast tumors and cysts lies in their nature and structure: breast tumors are solid masses formed by the proliferation of glandular or fibrous tissue, while breast cysts are cystic structures containing fluid. The former is often a benign tumor, while the latter is usually a benign lesion.

Breast tumors are mainly manifested as solid, smooth, and movable lumps that can be felt when touched. They are common in young women, especially between the ages of 20 and 40, and are mostly fibroadenomas. The cause of its formation is related to excessive estrogen levels or excessive breast response. Genetic factors may also pose a hidden danger to the occurrence of breast tumors. Certain familial hereditary breast diseases are related to the occurrence of breast tumors. Breast cysts often become larger when the menstrual period is approaching, and are usually soft and round to the touch, and may be accompanied by breast pain. The causes of breast cysts include blocked milk ducts, fluid retention, hormone fluctuations, or a history of smoking.

The treatment methods are also different. For breast tumors, when they are small and have no obvious effects, regular follow-up observations can be performed; if the tumor grows rapidly or there is a risk of malignancy, minimally invasive surgery can be used to remove it. If the breast cyst is small and asymptomatic, no treatment is required and regular observation is sufficient; when the pain is severe or the cyst is large, the cyst fluid can be extracted with a fine needle to reduce pressure. A healthy diet can help improve the situation, such as consuming more nuts rich in vitamin E and fish that supplement omega-3 fatty acids, while reducing caffeine intake may relieve cyst discomfort. Patients with breast tumors and cysts can also incorporate moderate exercise such as weight training to promote breast health.

When facing physical abnormalities, early detection and timely medical treatment are the key. Regular breast ultrasound examinations and maintaining good living habits can help prevent breast problems. Do not ignore any signs of lumps or persistent pain in the breast. Professional examinations are the basis for better health.
