What are the complications caused by gallstones?

Gallstones can cause a variety of complications. Be careful of further development of the disease. Consult a doctor if the condition is serious. Gallstones are usually formed by the precipitation of cholesterol, bilirubin or calcium salts in bile. These stones may block the bile duct and cause a series of complications.

Common complications that may be caused by gallstones include acute cholecystitis and cholangitis. When stones block the outlet of the gallbladder, it is easy to cause acute cholecystitis, symptoms of which include upper abdominal pain, fever and nausea. Cholangitis is caused by stones blocking the bile duct, leading to bile stasis and bacterial infection, manifested as abdominal pain, fever and jaundice. Once the stones fall into the pancreatic duct, they may also induce acute pancreatitis, characterized by severe abdominal pain and digestive system symptoms. Other rare but serious complications include gallbladder perforation or gallbladder necrosis, which are accompanied by severe abdominal pain and infection symptoms and often require emergency treatment.

If you have a history of gallstones, especially if you have upper abdominal discomfort, jaundice, fever and other symptoms, you should pay attention as soon as possible. Proper adjustment of the diet structure, such as reducing the intake of high-fat, high-cholesterol foods and consuming more fiber-rich foods, can partially prevent the onset of gallstones. For overweight people, gradually reducing weight can also help reduce the risk of gallstones. Regular physical examinations can help detect hidden dangers early. If acute and severe symptoms occur, such as persistent abdominal pain, fever, jaundice, etc., you need to consult a doctor in time and seek professional medical advice to avoid worsening of the condition.
