What to check for gallstones

After discovering gallstones, it is recommended to seek medical help immediately for an accurate diagnosis and evaluation. Gallstones are solid particles formed in the gallbladder that may cause a range of health problems, such as pain and jaundice. Early examination can help determine the severity of the condition and choose the appropriate treatment plan.

The formation of gallstones may be related to changes in the composition of bile, such as an imbalance of cholesterol or bile salts. Often, gallstones may not cause obvious symptoms, but in some cases, they may cause severe pain in the upper right side of the abdomen, especially after eating fatty foods. Nausea, vomiting, and indigestion may also be associated with symptoms.

Gallstones are usually diagnosed with an ultrasound, which is the most common and painless screening method. Ultrasound imaging can clearly show the stones in the gallbladder. For patients with small stones or suspected bile duct blockage, the doctor may recommend magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) to obtain more detailed information. Blood tests may also be performed to check liver function and check for signs of infection in the bile duct.

To relieve the discomfort that gallstones may cause or prevent them from getting worse, dietary changes are important: reduce your intake of high-cholesterol and high-fat foods and eat more fiber-rich foods, which help bile flow and digestion. Maintaining a healthy weight and regular exercise can also reduce the risk of gallstones forming again. For stones that recur or cause complications, surgical procedures such as laparoscopic cholecystectomy may need to be considered. Be sure to follow your doctor's advice when choosing the right treatment option.
