The difference between anal abscess and external hemorrhoids

Anal abscess and external hemorrhoids are two common but different anorectal diseases. Simply put, anal abscess is a purulent inflammation caused by infection, while external hemorrhoids are lumps caused by varicose veins or blood congestion around the anus.

An anal abscess is usually caused by a bacterial infection and may be related to damage to the skin around the anus. The infected area will be red, swollen, and painful, and you may feel a lump or even pus inside. External hemorrhoids form when pressure is put on the veins in the anus, such as from sitting for a long time or having difficulty passing a bowel movement. Symptoms of external hemorrhoids include swelling, pain, and even itching, but they are not usually accompanied by symptoms of infection like an anal abscess.

In both cases, anal abscesses often require surgical drainage, and the doctor may recommend antibiotic treatment to control the infection. Postoperative care and hygiene habits are very important to ensure that they do not recur. External hemorrhoids are more difficult to treat, and may require topical ointments, warm water baths, etc. to relieve discomfort. If the case is severe, surgical removal may also be required. Ways to reduce the symptoms of external hemorrhoids also include drinking more water and increasing dietary fiber intake to relieve constipation.

In order to effectively prevent and deal with these two conditions, maintaining good hygiene habits is key. In terms of diet, eating more fiber-rich foods such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains can help reduce the chance of external hemorrhoids. For any unexplained anal pain or swelling, it is the safest choice to seek professional medical help in time to avoid delaying the condition.
