Is breast cyst serious? What are the four types of harm?

Breast cysts are usually not serious and most are benign lesions, but their harmfulness needs to be assessed based on the specific situation. Breast cysts may be related to hormone fluctuations, blocked breast ducts, or breast tissue hyperplasia, and some cysts may be accompanied by pain or discomfort. Treatments include observation, medication, or surgical intervention, depending on the size of the cyst, symptoms, and the patient's health.

1. Causes of Breast Cysts

The formation of breast cysts is related to a variety of factors. Fluctuations in hormone levels are one of the main causes, especially an imbalance of estrogen and progesterone, which can cause the mammary ducts to dilate and form cysts. Blockage of the mammary ducts can also cause cysts, usually due to the accumulation of secretions that cause the ducts to swell. Proliferative changes in breast tissue may also increase the risk of cysts.

2. Harms of breast cysts

Most breast cysts are benign and do not increase your risk of breast cancer. However, some cysts may cause breast pain, swelling, or discomfort, especially around your menstrual period. Rarely, a cyst may become infected or grow rapidly, leading to complications such as abscesses or pressure on surrounding tissue.

3. Treatment of breast cysts

For small, asymptomatic cysts, regular observation is usually recommended without specific treatment. If the cyst causes pain or discomfort, medications such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen can be used to relieve symptoms, or hormone-regulating drugs such as danazol can be used to reduce cyst formation. For larger or complex cysts, aspiration or surgical removal may be required.

4. Daily management and prevention

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle can help reduce the risk of breast cysts. It is recommended to eat a balanced diet, reduce the intake of high-fat and high-sugar foods, and increase fiber-rich foods such as whole grains and vegetables. Moderate exercise such as brisk walking and yoga can help regulate hormone levels. Regular breast self-examination and breast ultrasound examinations can help detect abnormalities early.

Although breast cysts are mostly benign, appropriate treatment measures should be taken according to the symptoms and the nature of the cyst. Through a healthy lifestyle and regular check-ups, breast cysts can be effectively managed and their impact on quality of life can be reduced. If you have any concerns or your symptoms worsen, you should seek medical attention in time to obtain professional diagnosis and treatment advice.
