What causes gallstones?

Gallstones are deposits of solid matter caused by an imbalance in the bile composition in the gallbladder, which often form stones. The causes of gallstones are complex and are usually closely related to multiple factors such as lifestyle habits, dietary structure, and genetic factors.

The formation of gallstones is mainly related to the changes in the concentration of cholesterol, bile pigments and other components in bile. When there is too much cholesterol, it is easy to form crystals and gradually become larger stones. Long-term unhealthy diet, such as the intake of high-fat, high-cholesterol foods, can easily lead to cholesterol deposition. In addition, obesity, diabetes, pregnancy and the use of certain drugs also increase the risk of gallstones. Women are also prone to gallstones due to fluctuations in hormone levels, such as pregnancy or taking birth control pills.

The symptoms of gallstones vary depending on the size and number of the stones and whether they cause complications. Common symptoms include upper abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, indigestion, etc. If the stones block the bile duct, it may lead to serious problems such as cholecystitis and cholangitis.

In the face of gallstones, it is recommended to adjust the diet structure, reduce the intake of high-fat and high-cholesterol foods, increase the intake of fiber, and maintain good living habits. Moderate exercise and maintaining an ideal weight can also help prevent the formation of gallstones. If the symptoms are more severe or recurring, you should seek medical attention and treatment in time to avoid complications.
