How to prevent gallstones

How to prevent gallstones

Avoiding the formation of gallstones starts with improving diet and lifestyle. Gallstones are hardened substances formed by bile components in the gallbladder, and are common in people who have a high-fat, high-cholesterol diet and lack of exercise. Understanding its causes and symptoms can help us take effective preventive measures.

Gallstones are mainly divided into cholesterol stones and pigment stones. Cholesterol stones are common in people with a high fat content in their diet. The formation of this type of stone is related to the imbalance between cholesterol and bile acid in the bile. Pigment stones are related to the destruction of red blood cells and are common in certain specific disease conditions. Gallstones may not have obvious symptoms in the early stages, but once they block the bile duct, they can cause severe upper abdominal pain, jaundice and indigestion.

In terms of prevention, controlling your diet is key. Eating more fiber-rich foods and reducing fat and cholesterol intake can help maintain the normal flow of bile and prevent cholesterol from depositing and forming stones. Losing weight should be gradual to avoid rapid weight loss that causes a sudden release of cholesterol into the bile. Increasing water intake and maintaining adequate water intake can dilute bile and reduce the risk of stone formation. Increasing physical activity, at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week, can not only help maintain a healthy weight, but also promote the normal secretion and metabolism of bile.

For high-risk groups, such as those with a family history of gallstones, obese or pregnant women, regular ultrasound examinations can be requested to monitor the condition of the gallbladder. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is the best strategy for preventing gallstones. If symptoms such as persistent upper abdominal pain or jaundice occur, you should consult a professional doctor immediately to ensure that your health is not affected.
