How to treat gallstones

Gallstones can be treated in a variety of ways, and the specific treatment varies depending on the size of the stone, the severity of the symptoms, and the individual's physical condition. In daily life, many people do not understand the formation of gallstones. In fact, stones in the gallbladder are like gravel in shoes. They can make people feel uncomfortable and even cause serious health problems.

Gallstones form when cholesterol or bile pigment salts accumulate in the gallbladder, a small sac that stores bile and helps digest fats. Most people with gallstones have too much cholesterol in their bile that cannot be dissolved, resulting in the formation of crystals. Gallstones can be silent, but they can also cause severe abdominal pain, fever, and jaundice, especially if the stones block the bile duct. Certain risk factors such as obesity, rapid weight loss, a high-fat diet, or diabetes can increase the risk of developing gallstones.

When it comes to the treatment of gallstones, the patient's symptoms and the characteristics of the stones must be considered first. For those asymptomatic "quiet stones", observation can usually be adopted without emergency treatment; if obvious symptoms or complications occur, active treatment is usually required. Several common treatment methods include: gradually dissolving cholesterol stones through oral dissolving drugs, although this method is effective but takes a long time; extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy can break up larger stones so that they can be discharged with bile; another common and direct method is surgical removal of the gallbladder, which is considered to be the fundamental way to cure gallstones.

Rather than worrying about gallstones, you can make some changes in your life to prevent them from forming. Maintaining a healthy weight and eating a balanced diet can help prevent gallstones. Eat more fiber-rich fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and less high-cholesterol, high-fat foods. Regular exercise can help maintain your weight and reduce your risk of gallstones. Of course, if you experience symptoms of gallstones, be sure to consult your doctor to ensure you get the right diagnosis and treatment.
