Causes of jaw osteomyelitis in newborns

Neonatal jaw osteomyelitis may be caused by infection. Once obvious symptoms appear, you should seek medical attention immediately to ensure safety.

This disease is usually caused by bacterial infection, and the common pathogens are Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus. The newborn's immune system is not yet fully developed, and the rich blood supply to the jaw is a place where bacteria can easily breed. The infection may be transmitted through the blood, or it may be caused by inadequate sterilization of medical instruments during delivery or infection of the birth canal.

Early symptoms include local swelling, pain, limited jaw function, and possibly even fever and loss of appetite. If not treated promptly, the infection may spread, affecting other tissues or causing sepsis. Magnetic resonance imaging and blood tests are commonly used diagnostic methods. Treatment usually requires a combination of antibiotics, and in severe cases, surgery may be required to remove the infected area.

To reduce the risk, pregnant women should have regular prenatal checkups and strictly follow aseptic procedures during delivery. After the birth of the newborn, pay attention to avoid bacterial infection, maintain oral hygiene, handle small wounds in a timely manner, and take the baby to the hospital for detailed examination as soon as possible if any abnormality is found.
