What do the three types of breast cysts mean?

The three categories of breast cysts are usually divided into simple cysts, complex cysts and cysts with malignant characteristics based on the results of ultrasound examination. The purpose of classification is to assess the risk of malignancy and guide subsequent treatment.

Simple cysts are a common benign change, mostly appearing as round or oval, with clear borders, filled with fluid, and showing no echo or low echo on ultrasound. This type of cyst usually does not become malignant and is common in women with fluctuating estrogen levels, especially in the premenstrual period or before and after menopause. Complex cysts may contain a mixture of liquid and solid components, and ultrasound can show characteristics of septa, small nodules, or uneven fluid echoes. This situation requires attention. Although the possibility of malignancy is not high, further examination is sometimes recommended, such as a puncture biopsy. Cysts with malignant characteristics may show unclear boundaries, abnormal internal echoes, and even changes in the surrounding tissue structure under ultrasound, and the possibility of cancer usually needs to be highly suspected.

For simple cysts, no special treatment is generally required. Aspiration treatment is considered only when the cyst is large and causes discomfort. For complex cysts, follow-up treatment is determined based on the specific imaging manifestations, which may include follow-up observation or further examination. For cysts with malignant characteristics, whether or not they are accompanied by symptoms, further imaging examinations and biopsies should be performed as soon as possible to confirm the diagnosis.

If a breast cyst is found, it is recommended to have regular breast ultrasound examinations and pay attention to your physical condition. If the imaging examination indicates complex cysts or malignant characteristics, you should see a doctor as soon as possible for further professional evaluation and treatment to ensure your health and safety.
