At what size of breast cyst is surgery recommended?

Breast cysts generally do not require surgery. Surgery is only considered when the diameter is greater than 30-50mm and accompanied by obvious discomfort symptoms or suspected malignant lesions. The specific plan should be determined based on the doctor's judgment and the patient's personal situation.

Breast cysts are a common benign lesion in the breast, usually small fluid-filled vesicles. In most cases, cysts are caused by hormone fluctuations, are painless and harmless, and will not turn into cancer. It can appear alone or multiple times in the breast, and the size can range from a few millimeters to tens of millimeters. When the cyst is small and asymptomatic, it is usually only necessary to observe it regularly.

If the cyst is large, it will compress the breast tissue, causing distension or discomfort; symptoms may be more obvious before and after menstruation. At this time, the doctor may recommend needle aspiration to relieve symptoms. If the cyst fluid is bloody or abnormal, or if imaging examinations show thickening and irregularity of the cyst wall, further biopsy or surgery may be needed to confirm the diagnosis and rule out potential malignant risks.

Patients with breast cysts are advised to undergo regular breast ultrasound examinations to monitor changes in the cysts. If the cysts become larger, have abnormal shapes or textures, or experience increased pain, they should immediately go to a regular hospital for evaluation. At the same time, they should also pay attention to adjusting their work and rest schedules, eating a balanced diet, and especially reducing caffeine and high-fat diet intake to alleviate breast health problems.
