What are the common causes of spinal deformities?

Spinal deformities mainly include scoliosis, kyphosis and lordosis. Common causes are related to genetics, environment, lifestyle habits and diseases, and targeted interventions need to be taken based on the specific causes.

Genetic factors are an important cause of spinal deformity, especially when there is a history of similar diseases in the family, inheritance may increase the risk of disease. Environmental factors such as vitamin D deficiency, long-term desk work and other bad postures can lead to abnormal bone development or excessive pressure on the spine, inducing deformities. Physiologically, bones develop faster during adolescence, but muscle strength is insufficient, and spinal deformities are easily caused by poor posture or sports injuries. Trauma is also a common cause. For example, spinal injuries caused by falls or accidents may cause changes in curvature or stability. Some pathological factors deserve attention. Common diseases such as poliomyelitis and congenital muscular atrophy may cause spinal deformities. Among them, idiopathic scoliosis is the most common. Kyphosis is often caused by osteoporosis or Schuermann's disease, while lordosis may be caused by posture problems or lumbar spondylolisthesis.

Adjusting your posture in daily life is the key to preventing and correcting spinal deformities. Use ergonomic tables and chairs, maintain an upright sitting posture, and reduce the frequency of lowering your head for long periods of time. It is recommended to participate in more exercises that help stretch the spine, such as swimming and yoga, and pay attention to supplementing calcium and vitamin D to maintain bone health. If you suspect that you have a more serious spinal deformity, you should see a doctor as soon as possible, and have an X-ray examination to confirm the diagnosis. If necessary, orthopedic treatment with braces can be used, usually requiring an oblique brace or a night brace. Severe patients may consider surgical correction, such as spinal fusion, pedicle screw fixation, etc., to improve function and appearance.
