Are aneurysms dangerous in the elderly?

Aneurysms do pose certain risks to the elderly, especially if they are not discovered and treated in time, which may lead to serious consequences. It is recommended that people with high-risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking history or family history should undergo regular physical examinations and consult a doctor when necessary.

An aneurysm is an abnormal expansion of the arterial wall due to local weakness. It does not necessarily cause obvious symptoms, but as the aneurysm grows, the blood vessel wall may be under increasing pressure and may rupture. The elderly are at high risk of aneurysms due to decreased vascular elasticity and more chronic diseases, especially cerebral aneurysms and abdominal aortic aneurysms.

The manifestations and hazards of aneurysms vary depending on their location and size. For example, cerebral aneurysms may cause headaches, abnormal vision, or even hemorrhagic stroke, while ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysms are often accompanied by severe abdominal pain or even shock. In addition to genetics and aging, bad lifestyle habits such as smoking and high blood pressure can also increase the risk of formation. Regular examinations such as color Doppler ultrasound or CT scans are important means of early detection.

The elderly should pay attention to controlling blood pressure and blood sugar, quit smoking and limit alcohol consumption, maintain a healthy diet and exercise regularly, and monitor blood vessel health regularly. If you suddenly feel a headache, blurred vision, or severe abdominal pain, you should go to the hospital immediately and let the doctor determine whether further examination or treatment is needed.
