Is stenting necessary for carotid artery aneurysm?

Is stenting necessary for carotid artery aneurysm?

Carotid artery aneurysm refers to the aneurysm of the external carotid artery and its branches, the external segment of the internal carotid artery and the common artery, which is easy to appear at the carotid bifurcation. Patients will experience symptoms such as dyspnea, coughing when eating, and hoarseness. They need to go to a regular hospital for a physical examination, and then choose the appropriate treatment method according to the severity of the disease. Let's see whether a stent must be placed for a carotid aneurysm.

Carotid aneurysm does not require stent placement, which is a neurointerventional procedure that can reconstruct the complete vascular morphology. Stents need to be placed according to the shape and range of the carotid aneurysm. Most patients can be stented, but sometimes hybrid surgery, which is carotid artery resection, remote open surgery is not enough to place stents to achieve better results.

How are carotid artery aneurysms treated?

1. Aneurysm suture repair:

If the carotid artery aneurysm is a pseudoaneurysm with unclear boundaries, after the aneurysm cavity is sutured to repair the defect in the arterial wall, there will be obvious stenosis of the arterial lumen, affecting blood circulation, and it can be repaired by patch transplantation.

2. Aneurysm resection and vascular reconstruction:

Carotid artery aneurysms can be treated with arteriotomy and vascular reconstruction. After aneurysm resection, if the arterial defect is short, end-to-end anastomosis can be performed; if the defect is long, autologous vein transplantation can be performed; if the aneurysm is complicated by infection, autologous vein bypass transplantation is required.

3. Saccular aneurysm tangential resection and artery repair:

This surgical approach can also treat carotid artery aneurysms, which are capsule-shaped aneurysms that are treated along the tangent line and then repaired to the side wall of the artery to restore blood circulation.

The above introduces whether stent placement is necessary for carotid aneurysms, as well as other methods of treating carotid aneurysms. Each patient needs to choose the correct treatment method according to the severity of the disease. During the treatment process, pay attention to a proper diet, try to avoid high-fat, high-salt, and spicy foods, have regular work and rest habits every day, and don't always stay up late, but also maintain a positive and optimistic attitude to improve the treatment effect.
