What are the symptoms of gallstones and where does it hurt?

Gallstones often remain unnoticed for years until they cause significant discomfort. The most common symptom is severe pain in the upper abdomen, especially after eating fatty foods. The pain may radiate to the back or right shoulder and may be accompanied by nausea and vomiting.

Gallstones are solid particles caused by abnormalities in the composition of bile that can cause blockages in the gallbladder or as it passes through the bile ducts. High concentrations or imbalances in the main components of bile, such as cholesterol or bile pigments, are common causes of gallstone formation. Certain groups of people are more likely to develop gallstones, including obese people, people who are losing weight rapidly, pregnant women, and people with certain chronic medical conditions.

In terms of specific symptoms, in addition to typical biliary colic, there may also be discomfort such as indigestion, bloating, and loss of appetite. Sometimes gallstones can be asymptomatic for many years, and once the stones enter the bile duct, they may cause more serious cholangitis or pancreatitis. However, the pain usually lasts for a few minutes to a few hours before it subsides. However, if the gallbladder is inflamed, the pain may persist and worsen, and may even require emergency treatment.

If you often feel the above discomfort in certain situations, such as severe right upper abdominal pain within half an hour after a meal, it is recommended to record the detailed frequency and time of the symptoms, and pay special attention to diet and lifestyle habits. Moderate exercise, weight control, avoid overeating, and eat more fiber-rich foods are recommended preventive measures. Once frequent and severe symptoms occur, it is recommended to go to the hospital for examination in time to avoid delaying the condition. Early diagnosis and taking measures can effectively avoid the occurrence of complications.
