Do benign breast cysts require surgery?

Do benign breast cysts require surgery?

Breast cysts generally do not require surgery. The vast majority of breast cysts are benign, especially those that are confirmed as simple cysts after imaging tests. These benign cysts usually do not require treatment, they tend not to cause serious symptoms, and there is no risk of them turning into cancer.

We need to understand what breast cysts are. Breast cysts are small, fluid-filled sac-like structures in the breast, mostly found in women. These cysts may increase in size before menstruation due to hormone fluctuations and then shrink after menstruation. Usually, these cysts feel like soft, movable lumps and in most cases are painless or only slightly tender.

Specifically, the main tool for diagnosing breast cysts is ultrasound, which can help doctors distinguish whether the cyst contains fluid or solid matter. If the cyst is purely fluid, it is generally considered benign. If the cyst causes discomfort to the patient or does not appear typical on imaging tests, the doctor may recommend fine needle aspiration to relieve symptoms or for further analysis.

Generally speaking, surgery is not required unless the cyst continues to grow, causes pain, or there is suspicion of malignant change. If the cyst recurs and causes significant discomfort, surgical removal may be considered. Of course, it is important to have regular breast examinations to monitor any changes or new symptoms and to consult a professional for specific advice if necessary. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and good eating habits are also important aspects of preventing breast problems.
