What are the symptoms of gallstones?

Symptoms of gallstones usually include upper abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, and indigestion. Knowing these symptoms can help you identify the problem and take action.

Gallstones are solid particles that form in the gallbladder, usually made up of cholesterol, bile salts, and calcium. They can block the bile ducts, causing poor bile flow, which is what we usually call "gallstones." The formation of gallstones is related to factors such as eating habits, obesity, rapid weight loss, and certain chronic diseases. Most gallstones are asymptomatic, but when gallstones block the bile ducts, symptoms will appear.

Pain in the upper abdomen is one of the most common symptoms of gallstones. This pain usually occurs a few hours after eating and may radiate to the back or right shoulder. The pain is caused by the contraction of the gallbladder due to the blockage of the bile duct. Nausea and vomiting are common symptoms for people with gallstones, especially during the pain episodes. Patients may also experience bloating, burping, and a feeling of indigestion. If the gallstones cause inflammation, symptoms such as fever and chills may occur.

To avoid the discomfort and potential complications of gallstones, it is appropriate to take some daily measures. In terms of diet, it is recommended to eat less high-fat, high-cholesterol foods and increase fiber intake, such as eating more fresh fruits and vegetables. It is also very important to maintain a proper weight and avoid rapid weight loss, as rapid weight loss may increase the risk of gallstone formation. Maintaining good living habits, such as regular diet and moderate exercise, can largely prevent or reduce the symptoms of gallstones. However, if the symptoms are severe or persistent pain and discomfort occur, please consult a doctor in time.
