Can intestinal obstruction be relieved by not eating?

Not eating for intestinal obstruction cannot completely relieve the condition, but short-term fasting can reduce the burden on the intestine and buy time for treatment. The causes of intestinal obstruction include intestinal adhesions, tumors, hernias, etc. Treatment requires medication, surgery or conservative treatment depending on the specific cause.

1. Causes of intestinal obstruction

Intestinal adhesions are a common cause of intestinal obstruction, often caused by abdominal surgery or inflammation, which can cause the intestine to twist or become blocked. Intestinal tumors, especially malignant tumors, may compress the intestine or directly block the intestinal lumen. Hernias can also cause intestinal obstruction, when the intestine protrudes through a weak part of the abdominal wall, it is prone to incarceration and obstruction. Other causes include intestinal torsion, intussusception, and inflammatory bowel diseases.

2. Treatment of intestinal obstruction

Drug therapy is mainly used to relieve symptoms and prevent complications. Commonly used drugs include antibiotics such as cephalosporins, analgesics such as ibuprofen, and drugs that promote intestinal motility such as domperidone. Surgical treatment is suitable for severe or complex intestinal obstruction. Common surgical methods include intestinal adhesion lysis, tumor resection, and hernia repair. Conservative treatment includes fasting, gastrointestinal decompression, and intravenous rehydration, which is suitable for mild or partial intestinal obstruction.

3. Diet and lifestyle advice

During the recovery period of intestinal obstruction, the diet should be light and easily digestible, such as rice porridge, steamed eggs and cooked vegetables. Avoid eating high-fiber, difficult-to-digest foods, such as nuts, beans and fried foods. Moderate exercise can help promote intestinal peristalsis, such as walking and light yoga, but avoid strenuous exercise.

Intestinal obstruction is an emergency that requires prompt treatment. Although fasting can temporarily alleviate symptoms, it cannot replace treatment. Once symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting, and constipation occur, you should seek medical attention immediately to identify the cause and take targeted treatment.
