How effective is Chinese medicine in treating gallstones?

Traditional Chinese medicine for gallstones may help relieve symptoms, but it cannot fundamentally dissolve or expel the stones. It is recommended to discuss appropriate treatment options with a doctor after a confirmed diagnosis.

Gallstones are solid particles in the gallbladder, mainly due to abnormal bile composition, cholestasis or infection. Generally, if the stones are small and asymptomatic, observation or conservative treatment can be adopted; however, if severe pain, infection or other complications occur, active treatment is required.

The application of traditional Chinese medicine in the treatment of gallstones is more of an indirect effect by regulating bile metabolism in the body, improving digestive function, and relieving gallbladder inflammation. For example, some traditional Chinese medicine prescriptions may contain ingredients that can "soothe the liver and promote gallbladder function", such as Artemisia capillaris, Lysimachia chinensis, or Bupleurum chinense. These herbs are considered to help regulate liver and gallbladder function and relieve discomfort in the gallbladder area. However, traditional Chinese medicine cannot directly dissolve or eliminate stones, and the effect varies from person to person, and the abuse of traditional Chinese medicine may aggravate the condition.

If gallstones are diagnosed, it is equally important to adjust your lifestyle. Reducing the intake of high-fat, high-cholesterol foods and eating more fruits and vegetables rich in dietary fiber can help reduce the risk of gallstone recurrence. Regular exercise can also help promote bile flow. However, if severe biliary colic, fever or jaundice symptoms occur, you should go to the hospital for professional treatment in time.
