Symptoms of intestinal obstruction in 5-year-old children

If you experience symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and bloating, you should be alert to intestinal obstruction, especially if the symptoms continue to worsen. You should go to the hospital for examination as soon as possible to avoid delaying treatment.

Intestinal obstruction is one of the common acute abdominal diseases in children, and its main manifestations are repeated nausea and vomiting, the vomit may contain bile, and is accompanied by abdominal pain, which is usually paroxysmal and may be temporarily relieved after each attack, but gradually worsens. Abdominal distension is another hallmark symptom, and obvious tension may be felt when touching the abdomen. At the same time, the child may have difficulty defecating and passing gas, or even be completely unable to defecate. Due to the influence of the disease, some children may also show systemic reactions such as listlessness and pale complexion, accompanied by fever or signs of dehydration in severe cases. If a mass in the abdomen can be felt during palpation, especially a fixed mass, intestinal obstruction should be highly suspected. If a child has repeated vomiting accompanied by persistent abdominal pain or severe crying and restlessness, it is also a dangerous signal.

Parents should be alert to the above signals in daily observation and seek medical attention immediately if they appear. In terms of treatment, mild intestinal obstruction can be treated conservatively through fasting, gastric tube decompression and correction of water and electrolyte imbalance, but if there are serious lesions, surgical treatment should be considered, such as intussusception reduction surgery, intestinal adhesion lysis or partial necrotic intestinal resection. In terms of diet, it is recommended to give easily digestible liquid food after surgery and gradually transition to a normal diet to prevent recurrence. Maintaining children's regular diet, avoiding strenuous activities after eating, and cultivating regular bowel habits can all help prevent the occurrence of intestinal obstruction. If similar symptoms occur, they should be taken seriously to avoid delaying the disease.
