Is Chinese medicine effective for femoral head necrosis?

Taking Chinese medicine may be effective for femoral head necrosis, but the effect is usually limited and varies from person to person. Chinese medicine treatment is usually used as an auxiliary means. Femoral head necrosis is a disease in which bone tissue necrosis occurs due to insufficient blood supply to the femoral head. Chinese medicine is often used to improve blood circulation, relieve pain and delay the progression of the disease, but it cannot completely replace other treatments. If the condition is serious, it may be difficult to achieve satisfactory results relying solely on Chinese medicine.

Femoral head necrosis can be divided into early, middle and late stages. For early stage patients, Chinese medicine may improve local blood flow by promoting blood circulation and removing blood stasis, and replenishing liver and kidney functions. Commonly used drugs include Danshen, Pueraria lobata and Drynaria fortunei. Some patients will feel pain relief and functional improvement. However, for patients in the middle or late stages, due to severe bone tissue damage, it is difficult to recover with Chinese medicine alone, and they need to be combined with drug treatment or intervention therapy, including non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to relieve pain and bisphosphonates to reduce bone destruction. Late stage patients often require surgical treatment, such as total hip replacement or core decompression. Combined with physical rehabilitation therapy, scientific weight management and other means, it can also help relieve symptoms and prevent deterioration.

During the period of TCM-assisted treatment, you should follow the advice of professional doctors and avoid blind medication. Avoid excessive weight bearing and strenuous activities to avoid increasing the risk of femoral head ischemia progression. Eat more calcium-rich foods, such as milk, beans, etc., to promote bone health. Check the femoral head regularly. If obvious dysfunction or persistent pain occurs, seek medical attention in time so that the treatment plan can be adjusted in time.
