Causes of perianal abscess in infants

The occurrence of perianal abscess in infants may be related to infection or skin hypoplasia and is one of the common health problems of newborns and infants.

This condition is usually caused by bacterial infection around the rectum. The baby's immune system is not yet fully developed. In addition, the skin around the anus is delicate and can be easily damaged due to friction, improper post-defecation cleaning, or indigestion, allowing bacteria to enter and cause infection. In addition, incomplete development of the anal glands may also lead to blockage of glandular secretions, providing suitable growth conditions for bacteria. It is generally manifested as redness, swelling, and bulges around the anus, which may be accompanied by a feeling of hardness when pressed or increased crying of the baby.

The specific symptoms may vary in severity due to individual differences. Mild cases may only show local redness, swelling and a slightly higher temperature, while severe cases may cause suppuration, form an obvious pus cavity, and even have pus discharge. Some babies may have difficulty defecating or cry restlessly, and in severe cases, they may also have a low fever. Some parents may mistake it for an ordinary rash, thus delaying treatment.

In terms of daily care, you can keep the baby's anus clean and dry, wash it with warm water and gently dry it after each bowel movement; change diapers regularly to avoid prolonged moisture and heat irritating the skin; if you find that the anus is starting to become red and swollen, try using a warm towel for hot compresses and observe whether the redness and swelling are reduced. It should be reminded that if an abscess has formed, do not squeeze it or use medication by yourself, and consult a professional doctor as soon as possible to avoid the spread of infection or further deterioration.
