What are the most common types of gallstones?

Cholesterol gallstones are the most common. About 70% to 80% of gallstone cases are caused by high cholesterol concentrations. This happens when the cholesterol in the bile loses balance with bile acids and phosphatidylcholine. Bile is like a pool of water. Normally, cholesterol swims peacefully in the water like fish. But once too much cholesterol is produced, these extra "fish" will aggregate and form stones.

These cholesterol gallstones are usually caused by improper diet, obesity, genetic factors, etc. Diet is closely related to the formation of cholesterol gallstones. For example, a high-fat, high-sugar diet can cause excessive cholesterol in bile. Being overweight can cause bile to concentrate and increase the chance of gallstone formation. In contrast, other types of gallstones, such as pigment gallstones, although they also have a certain incidence, are less common than cholesterol gallstones.

An effective way to prevent gallstones is to adjust your diet. Increasing dietary fiber intake, such as eating more vegetables and fruits, can help reduce the concentration of cholesterol in bile. Maintaining a healthy weight and exercising regularly are also very important, which can promote the normal secretion and flow of bile and reduce the chance of stone formation. If you suspect that you have a gallstone problem, such as unexplained abdominal pain or indigestion, it is recommended to consult a professional doctor as soon as possible, because once gallstones cause complications, it will be more complicated to deal with.
