How long does it take for anal abscess to form anal fistula?

If perianal abscesses are not treated effectively, they may develop into anal fistulas within a few weeks to months. Many patients will find that if perianal abscesses are not treated properly over a period of time, the pus will be discharged on its own, forming a persistent fistula, which is the process of anal fistula formation.

Perianal abscess is a purulent disease caused by infection of tissues around the anus. It is common in adults. Due to bacterial infection, pus accumulates in local tissues and causes swelling and pain. If it is not drained and treated in time or properly, the pressure inside the abscess will increase, which may eventually cause pus to escape from the skin and form an abnormal channel, the so-called anal fistula.

The speed of development is affected by many factors, including individual constitution, degree of infection, and treatment. If the abscess cannot be completely drained and is repeatedly infected, the risk of anal fistula formation may be further increased. At the same time, some lifestyle habits, such as long periods of sitting, eating greasy or spicy foods, and insufficient fiber intake, may also aggravate the development of the disease.

To prevent abscesses from forming anal fistulas, patients are advised to be alert to abnormal symptoms around the anus, such as swelling and severe pain, and seek medical help as soon as possible, ensure cleanliness and hygiene, avoid sitting for long periods of time, adjust their diet, and eat more high-fiber foods to maintain a good intestinal environment. Regular check-ups are also an important means of prevention and early detection. Timely medical intervention can significantly improve prognosis and reduce the risk of anal fistula formation.
