What causes gallstones?

The formation of gallstones is mainly due to excessive cholesterol or bile pigment in bile, which leads to crystal precipitation and the formation of stones. In our body, the gallbladder is like a "storage tank" that is specifically used to store and concentrate bile. However, once the composition of bile is unbalanced, it may gradually deposit into stones like scale in a kettle.

There are two main causes of gallstones: cholesterol and pigment. Cholesterol stones are the most common and usually occur when there is more cholesterol than bile salts in the bile; a high-fat diet, obesity or rapid weight loss can worsen this imbalance. Pigment stones are less common and are often associated with chronic infection, cirrhosis and certain blood disorders. Gender and age are also risk factors - women and older people are more likely to develop the disease, while pregnancy, birth control use and family history may also increase the risk.

The symptoms of gallstones are often pain in the upper right abdomen, which is sometimes so severe that it is unbearable. The pain may occur after eating greasy food, accompanied by nausea, vomiting, or even fever. If the stones move and cause bile duct obstruction, it may cause acute cholecystitis or pancreatitis, which is more serious. Analyzing the causes and symptoms of gallstones helps to understand its potential health crisis.

To maintain gallbladder health, the key is to adjust diet and lifestyle. Maintaining a normal weight, taking in an appropriate amount of dietary fiber, exercising moderately and properly controlling cholesterol intake can help prevent the formation of gallstones. Drinking plenty of water can help dilute bile components and reduce the risk of stone formation.
