What happens if a breast cyst becomes malignant?

Most breast cysts are benign and will not become malignant, but in some special cases, you need to be alert to the possibility of malignant lesions. It is recommended to see a doctor as soon as possible for a clear diagnosis.

Breast cysts are small, fluid-filled sacs in the breast tissue that are common in women, especially between the ages of 30 and 50. These cysts are usually caused by hormone fluctuations or degenerative changes in the breast glands. Benign breast cysts are usually asymptomatic, soft or firm, with clear borders, and feel like grapes or rubber. In some cases, the cysts may increase in size, become painful, or cause some other discomfort, so be alert to abnormal changes.

Although most breast cysts are benign, some cysts, such as those with irregular shapes, uneven internal echoes, or local lumps, may indicate the risk of malignant transformation. If the cyst grows rapidly in a short period of time, there is nipple discharge (especially bloody) or accompanied by axillary lymphadenopathy, you should also pay attention. At this time, ultrasound, mammography, or even puncture biopsy can help doctors more accurately determine the nature of the cyst.

In order to reduce the risk of breast cysts becoming malignant or related problems, it is recommended to perform regular breast self-examinations, touching the breasts one week after the end of menstruation every month; and regular physical examinations with breast ultrasound or mammography screening. If abnormalities are found, seek medical attention immediately, avoid high-fat and high-sugar diets, and maintain regular exercise to control abnormal fluctuations in estrogen levels. If there is a family history of breast cancer, be especially vigilant and strengthen monitoring according to the doctor's advice.
