If gallstones do not cause symptoms, they may not require treatment for the time being, but regular follow-up observation is also important.

Gallstones are solid particles that form in the gallbladder or bile ducts, mainly composed of cholesterol or bile pigment. They can vary in size and number from one to many, some like small grains of sand to some as big as a golf ball. Some gallstones have no symptoms, which we call "asymptomatic gallstones." These asymptomatic stones, when discovered, are usually discovered incidentally during a physical exam or when imaging tests are done for other reasons.

For asymptomatic gallstones, if they do not cause acute inflammation, infection, pain or other symptoms in the gallbladder or bile duct, immediate treatment is generally not required, because surgery or other interventions themselves have certain risks. However, this does not mean that the presence of these stones can be completely ignored. Regular follow-up is very important, and regular abdominal ultrasound examinations are performed to monitor whether the gallstones are enlarged, increased or have the risk of causing symptoms. Especially when the stones are large or tend to increase, you should be more alert to their potential risks.

If gallstones do not cause symptoms, you can continue to observe, but you must pay attention to your diet and lifestyle. Maintain a balanced low-fat diet, avoid overeating, and increase physical activity to reduce the probability of gallstone formation. If you have symptoms such as upper abdominal discomfort, severe pain, fever or jaundice, you should seek medical attention immediately. Medical staff will provide treatment recommendations and appropriate treatment methods based on the specific situation, such as using drugs to dissolve stones or considering surgery.
