Is an aneurysmal bone cyst serious?

For aneurysmal bone cysts, most patients do not understand the specific situation, and some patients do not pay attention, which leads to worsening of the condition. So, is aneurysmal bone cyst serious?

Aneurysmal bone cyst is a serious disease. Patients should pay attention, go to the hospital in time, and cooperate with doctors for effective treatment.

Aneurysmal bone cyst is a benign solitary bone tumor with a uniform foamy transparent area. This disease often occurs in older children and young and middle-aged people. The tumor is usually located in the epiphysis and the diaphysis or the posterior part of the spine. There is local pain and swelling, dysfunction of the affected part, and symptoms of spinal cord compression in the spine. Local puncture and aspiration of blood often have high pressure. Aneurysmal bone cyst is an expansive osteolytic lesion composed of blood cavity spaces of varying sizes. The cyst wall is a connective tissue containing osteoid tissue, trabeculae, and osteoclasts.

Surgical treatment: including curettage, curettage and bone grafting, local large-scale resection butterfly surgery, amputation and even amputation. Simple curettage and curettage have a high recurrence rate of 20% to 60%, and some cases may relapse multiple times. The operation and postoperative treatment of local large-scale resection or segmentation are relatively complicated, and bone transplantation is required after surgery. This method is a thorough treatment with a low recurrence rate. Biesecker reported 8 cases and William 1986 reported 6 cases without recurrence. In order to reduce bleeding, a tourniquet can be used during surgery or a large supply artery can be temporarily blocked.

For proximal lesions of the spine, pelvis, and femur, selective vascular embolization can achieve better results. This method is used preoperatively to reduce intraoperative bleeding or as a single treatment.

Cryotherapy: After scraping off the local lesion, liquid nitrogen is poured into the bone cavity to rapidly cool the local area. The freezing depth can reach 1-2 mm. Residual bone grafting can reduce the recurrence rate. Biesecker treated 13 cases, followed up for 4 years, and 1 case recurred. Marcove reported 33 cases with 2 recurrences.

Aneurysmal bone cyst is a serious disease. Patients can learn about it based on the above introduction or consult a doctor for details.
