Are breast cysts and hyperplasia the same thing?

Breast cysts and breast hyperplasia are not the same thing. Although both are common breast diseases, they are significantly different in causes, manifestations, and treatments. If you find breast discomfort or abnormalities, it is recommended to see a doctor as soon as possible for a clear diagnosis.

Breast cysts are small cysts formed by fluid accumulation due to blockage of breast lobules or ducts, and are mostly benign. Breast hyperplasia is caused by abnormal proliferation of breast tissue, which can manifest as breast pain, hardening or nodules, and may be related to endocrine fluctuations. In simple terms, one is mainly "fluid accumulation" and the other is "tissue hyperplasia".

Cysts usually feel like a soft and elastic water ball, and in most cases there is no obvious discomfort; while hyperplastic nodules may be hard, accompanied by increased or decreased pain during the menstrual cycle. Although the risk of malignancy for both is low, any changes in unexplained nodules should not be taken lightly.

It is recommended to maintain a regular schedule, avoid anxiety and excessive stress; eat less high-fat and high-sugar foods, and choose more vegetables and fruits rich in dietary fiber. If you find irregular nodules or persistent discomfort in your breasts, you should go to a regular hospital for examination in time, such as color ultrasound or mammography, to clarify the next treatment plan.
