Causes of tibia and fibula fractures

Tibial and fibula fractures are usually closely related to factors such as trauma, sports injuries, and pathological bone fragility, including genetics, environment, physical fitness, and underlying diseases. Understanding the cause can help prevent and improve treatment outcomes, and appropriate treatment plans need to be developed based on specific circumstances.

1) Genetic factors

Certain inherited bone diseases increase the risk of tibia and fibula fractures, such as osteogenesis imperfecta. This inherited disease causes the bones to be congenitally fragile, and even a slight collision may cause a fracture. If someone in your family has a similar disease, you need to manage your bone health in advance and have regular physical examinations.

2) Environmental factors: external trauma

The main cause of tibia and fibula fractures in daily life is external trauma, such as traffic accidents, accidental falls, or collisions during strenuous exercise. This type of injury is usually a fracture caused by a high-intensity external force in an instant. For example, falling from a height or colliding with others while playing football may cause tibia and fibula fractures. Wearing protective gear and strengthening protection awareness in formal sports can effectively reduce the occurrence of such fractures.

3) Physiological factors: insufficient bone density

Osteoporosis is a common but easily overlooked hidden cause of disease, especially in the elderly or those who have long-term calcium and vitamin D deficiency. Decreased bone density makes bones more vulnerable to external damage, thus causing fractures. Osteoporosis-related fractures can be effectively prevented by improving diet (such as consuming more milk, deep-sea fish, and green leafy vegetables), taking appropriate calcium supplements, and increasing outdoor exercise (such as walking and playing table tennis).

4) Pathological factors: underlying diseases

Certain diseases increase the likelihood of bone fragility, such as bone tumors or metastatic cancer. Tumors can weaken bone strength, making the tibia and fibula more susceptible to pathological fractures without significant external force. In this case, you should go to the hospital for screening and treatment of related diseases in a timely manner, and if necessary, you may need drug intervention or surgical removal of the diseased tissue.

5) Other injuries and general health problems

Long-term high-risk work or repeated local pressure (such as weightlifting, long jump) may cause chronic damage to the tibia and fibula, leading to fatigue fractures. In adolescents, because their bones are not yet fully mature, they are also prone to bone fractures under sudden external forces.

If a tibia and fibula fracture occurs, it is very important to seek medical attention as soon as possible. After clarifying the cause and mechanism of injury, the doctor may recommend plaster fixation, metal internal fixation (such as intramedullary nailing, plate and screw fixation), or the use of biomaterials to promote fracture healing. During the rehabilitation period, attention should be paid to increasing dietary calcium and protein, and gradually resuming lower limb functional exercises.

Tibial and fibula fractures are usually caused by multiple factors. Prevention should be a combination of genetics, daily protection and bone health management.
