How to treat rectal polyps

How to treat rectal polyps

Rectal polyps require appropriate treatment based on the type, size and number of polyps, and timely medical attention is required when necessary.

Rectal polyps refer to small abnormal growths of tissue on the surface of the rectal mucosa. They may appear as benign hyperplastic polyps or adenomatous polyps. If not managed in time, there may be a risk of malignant transformation. Some polyps are small and have no obvious symptoms, while larger polyps sometimes cause blood in the stool, diarrhea, or discomfort during defecation.

Common treatments include endoscopic resection and traditional surgical resection. Endoscopic resection is mainly suitable for single or small polyps. The operation is simple and the recovery is fast. If the polyps are large or numerous, more comprehensive surgical treatment may be required. Doctors usually determine the nature of the polyps through colonoscopy, which is crucial for subsequent treatment.

Developing healthy living habits can help reduce the risk of polyps. Eat more foods rich in dietary fiber (such as whole grains, vegetables, and fruits) in your daily diet, maintain moderate exercise, and undergo regular colonoscopy screening. Especially for those with a family history of colon cancer or those over 40 years old, you should consult a specialist for detailed screening and treatment plans. If you have abnormal bowel movements or blood in your stool, please go to the hospital for a clear diagnosis as soon as possible.
