What to do if the perianal abscess is swollen

When perianal abscess is severely swollen, you need to see a doctor immediately to drain the pus. At the same time, you should choose anti-infection treatment, surgical intervention or local care according to the condition to prevent the spread of infection or the formation of fistula. Delaying treatment may aggravate symptoms and even cause systemic infection.

Perianal abscess is an acute infection in the perianal tissue, often caused by anal gland obstruction or intestinal bacterial infection. It manifests as local redness, swelling, fever, severe pain, etc. In the early stages of inflammation, it can be controlled by drug treatment, such as the use of antibiotics (such as ceftriaxone, levofloxacin or metronidazole) to eliminate the infection, and anti-inflammatory and analgesic drugs to relieve symptoms. For patients with severe swelling or abscess formation, it is difficult to cure the disease with medication alone. Surgical incision and drainage are required to completely drain the pus and avoid aggravating the infection. After surgery, you need to continue using antibiotics as prescribed by your doctor, and assist with warm water sitz baths to promote healing. If treatment is not timely, the abscess may transform into anal fistula, which is a more complicated condition that requires further fistula removal surgery.

To prevent and alleviate symptoms, it is recommended to keep the anus clean, avoid long-term sitting, and reduce pressure on the affected area. Drink more water and eat more high-fiber foods (such as whole grains, vegetables, and fruits) to improve bowel movement and prevent anal fissures or constipation from aggravating the condition. Those with severe pain can try to use warm salt water baths to relieve discomfort, but any care methods must be performed under the guidance of a doctor. In the face of perianal abscesses, patients should not delay diagnosis and treatment. Keep in mind the importance of scientific treatment and postoperative care, and do your best to resume normal life.
